Course Description

RIVA 207 – Fundamentals of IDI Moderating, has been specially developed for qualitative researchers who are looking to conduct one-on-one interviews with individuals.

This intensive 4-day course focuses on principles and best practices for conducting effective In-Depth Interviews. The process of talking to one person in an interview setting requires a different skill set than talking to multiple respondents in a focus group setting. RIVA 207 provides an experiential, multi-faceted training environment for students to learn the fundamentals of In-Depth Interviews in general and, specifically, what works/does not work when doing an In-Depth Interview, as well as practice what they’ve learned. Students will sharpen their skills through repeated tasks that build exponentially and through constant and individualized feedback and coaching.

Course Prerequisites:

There are no prerequisites for this course.

After taking this course, graduates will be able to:

• Identify a set of best practices for leading effective IDIs which includes: development of individualized ground rules & guidelines, crafting appropriate questions and probes, methods to build rapport, techniques to get below top-of-mind answers, managing time, etc.

• Develop an appropriate comfort level for conducting IDIs with a diverse set of respondents

• Define the underpinnings of IDIs in the qualitative research paradigm and how they differ from survey interviews

• Demonstrate ability to lead an IDI

How Students are Assessed: 

Students are expected to attend and participate in all modules, including lectures, practice sessions with fellow students, practice sessions with recruited respondents, and open forums. Trainers use in-depth feedback forms to provide students with individualized, targeted written and oral feedback throughout the class. On day four of class, students will have the opportunity to demonstrate the implementation of all feedback via in-depth interviews with recruited respondents.
